Tanzania is one of Africa’s top tourist destinations – home to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Regarded as highly biodiverse, Tanzania offers superb wildlife viewing, including the annual wildebeest migration and chimpanzee tracking.

Ruaha National Park is the largest park in Tanzania and East Africa, comparable in size to New Jersey.

Almost 40% of Tanzania’s land has been set aside as protected areas and conservancies.

Three of Africa’s Great Lakes are partly within Tanzania. Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake, is in the north and Lake Tanganyika, the continent’s deepest lake, is in the west. Lake Nyasa lies in the southwest.

Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, with an elevation of 5,895m (19,341ft) it is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Highlights and sights

The Serengeti

The Serengeti, which includes the Ngorongoro Crater region, is known for the annual wildebeest migration, when two million animals migrate throughout the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. It is considered one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world.

The Grumeti Reserve

The Grumeti Reserve is situated in northern Tanzania and forms part of the expansive Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. It is situated on the migratory route, with a vast and endless view over the plains and an abundance of wildlife.

The Mahale Mountains

The Mahale Mountains, home to one of the few remaining wild populations of chimpanzees, borders on lake Tanganyika. Gombe Stream National Park, made popular by Jane Goodall’s pioneering research into primate behavior, borders it to the north.
