Botswana is a landlocked country, slightly larger than France and surrounded by Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Most of the country is made up of the Kalahari Desert, making it one of the most sparsely populated regions in the world. In stark contrast to the arid Kalahari, the northwestern part of the country is dominated by the Okavango Delta, one of the world’s largest wetlands.
Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO cultural world heritage site, is an area well known for its historic rock art, with over 4,500 paintings dating back thousands of years.
Botswana has one of the few remaining large populations of the endangered African wild dog and the world’s largest concentration of African elephants, estimated at around 150,000.
The country has also banned the hunting of wild animals and is spearheading the re-introduction of 100 rhinos from South Africa, in an effort to bolster conservation efforts and fight poaching.
